Registering for Netmath

How do I begin?

  1. Select your class
  2. Determine if you have the prerequisites for that class. See Who Qualifies
  3. Ensure that you have a computer which meets the requirements to run Mathematica. Also ensure that you have access to an internet connection to get and submit homework assignments.
  4. You can enroll at any time and you will have 16 weeks to complete the course. However, you may purchase up to three 1-month extensions costing $100 each if unable to complete the course in the allotted 16 week time frame (see Netmath Extension Policy for more information). (link to info on bottom of this page)
  5. Find a test proctor, someone who will supervise your tests. See the testing and proctors page for information on who meets the requirements to be a proctor.
  6. You may take classes for individual course credit or as part of the NetMath Certificate of Professional Development in Applied Mathematics.  If you are registering in the NetMath Certificate program, please consult the list of course requirements here before selecting your class.  Enrollment in multiple courses at one time is not permissible (exception is made for Math 290 which must be taken simultaneously with another course).
  7. If you have any questions, please contact us at netmathinfo@cm.math.uiuc.edu.

How do I Register?

Do not proceed with the registration process until you are ready to begin a course. Please note that registrations can take up to two weeks to process.

  1. If you are a High School Student, Register Here
All Others (including UIUC students) Register Here
  2. You will be supplied with a University Id Number (UIN) after your registration has been processed.  You will also be given directions on how to claim your University NetId and how to set your NetId password. You can use your NetID to set up your UIUC e-mail address. Instructions can be found here. You will need this e-mail account to get a student copy of Mathematica from the CITES Webstore. NOTE: Current University of Illinois undergraduate students need approval from their college in order to register in NetMath courses. Once your registration request is received, OCE will seek permission from your college. The registration process will be completed once your college gives approval.
  3. A welcome email will be sent to you as soon as the university processes your enrollment and you appear on the course rosters. This usually takes a couple of days. The welcome email will include logins to the course management system as well as information on purchasing Mathematica and the course materials. At this time, you will also be assigned a mentor.
  4. Get a test proctor, then download and complete the proctorship forms. When you're finished, you can send them to us via fax at (217) 333-8524 or mail them to:
    Online & Continuing Education
    University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Once You’re Registered: Purchase Software

In order to complete a NetMath course you'll need some software. Please follow our instructions for acquiring required software and courseware.

NetMath Extension Policy

  • NetMath students are allowed to purchase up to three (3) one-month extensions in the course, provided they have completed the recommended coursework before applying for each extension. Only one extension may be purchased at a time. Extensions cost $100 each and are non-refundable. Your extension request must be received seven (7) business days before the course expiration date. When your extension request is approved, your student account will be charged for the cost of the extension. Students who have a financial hold on their account must clear the hold before they can purchase an extension. Please submit this form as your official extension request.
  • Students enrolled in the ALEKS version of a math course are not eligible for one month extensions as access to the ALEKS program is limited.  High school students enrolled in 9 month courses are also not eligible to receive extensions.

NetMath drop and refund policy:

Students who wish to withdraw from the program may do so at any time during the course timeframe. Students must formally request to drop a course by completing and submitting a Change of Status form. Once you receive your final grade, you cannot drop your course.

Tuition refunds and credits are processed according to the pro-rated refund policy, based on the date the course begins and the date on which we receive a student's formal drop request. The refund policy is always effective, regardless of whether a student did or did not begin a course. Once you have completed half of your course, no refund will be given regardless of when the request is made. The Online & Continuing Education administrative course fee ($50 per credit hour) is non-refundable. For courses that use ALEKS (Math 012, Math 014, and ALEKS sections of Math 016), there is a non-refundable fee of $67.50).  For questions about dropping NetMath courses and to verify eligibility for a partial tuition refund, contact the Online & Continuing Education (phone: 800-252-1360 ext. 36305, email: oce-registsec@ad.uiuc.edu). More information may be found here. Extension fees are non-refundable.

FERPA Rights

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, commonly known as FERPA, is a federal law that governs educational records. It grants specific rights to students and regulates how institutions must handle educational record, including grades. The main focus of FERPA is to give students rights to see their records and to protect against disclosures of certain information without the student’s consent or specific legal authorization. For more information regarding FERPA visit the following website: http://www.registrar.illinois.edu/transcripts/ferpa.html

A special note to High School students and their parents: This law transfers all the rights of the Act to the student as soon as he/she enters the higher education setting, even if they are still in high school. Article 99.5 (a) states, “When a student becomes an eligible student, the rights accorded to, and consent required of, parents under this part transfer from the parents to the student.” At UIUC, this applies on the first day of instruction, even if the student is under 18 years of age—and is indefinite. The full text of the Act and some FAQ’s for parents can be found at the Department of Education website.

This message serves as your annual FERPA notification as required by law.
